A Celebrated Tradition
Every year, the charming Summerlee Heritage Museum in Coatbridge transforms into a hub of excitement for speedway enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This year’s annual speedway day was no exception, drawing a crowd of over 500 eager visitors who gathered to admire a truly unique collection of vintage bikes.
Dazzling Displays
The enthusiasts were treated to an array of beautifully preserved motorcycles, with models including the revered Weslakes and Godden standing proudly on display. The showcase didn’t just stop at these prized machines; it extended to rare Japs and uprights, ensuring that aficionados of historic speedway bikes were utterly enthralled.
A Journey Through Time
As stated in Daily Record, the event was a journey through the archives of speedway history, featuring photos, programmes, and memorabilia that took visitors back in time to the glory days of the sport in the region. In a unique outdoor set-up, DVDs played inside gazebos, allowing everyone to take in the sights and sounds of a bygone era.
Star-Studded Guests
Highlighting the celebration was the presence of three legendary figures from Coatbridge’s speedway history: Brian Collins, Bobby Beaton, and Jim Beaton. These icons from the 1973-77 Tigers era graciously mingled with fans, sharing stories and memories that added richness to the day’s experience.
A Collaborative Effort
Event organiser John Houston was effusive in his gratitude: “I would like to thank everyone involved, from bike owners to museum staff and our tireless volunteers. It was a joy to see such enthusiasm and support for preserving this aspect of our heritage.”
A Successful Day for All
Despite the array of activities and displays, perhaps the most cherished aspect of the event was the community it forged. Thanks to the warm reception and perfect weather, attendees left with fond memories and newfound friends, all united by their passion for speedway.
Celebrate these moments, and keep the spirit alive! There’s always something exhilarating happening at the Summerlee Heritage Museum—be sure to join the excitement at next year’s speedway day.
