New Delhi: In a new effort to make science more approachable, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has unveiled ‘Jigyasa’, a unique outreach initiative designed to bridge the gap between advanced research and the general public. The initiative is directed by the academic outreach office of the institute with the aspiration of demystifying science.
A Noble Commitment to Science Outreach
The essence of ‘Jigyasa’ is to simplify complex scientific concepts through engaging, informal interactions, reaching out not only to current scientists but also students, parents, teachers, and curious minds who may not have a scientific background. According to officials from IIT Delhi, this program promises to enhance public understanding of how scientific discoveries bear relevance on daily life, spanning healthcare, energy, technology, and environmental issues.
Encouraging Conversations in Science
Participants are encouraged to share their perspectives and inquire about scientific matters, serving as a conduit for nurturing a culture of curiosity and critical thinking. As stated by an official, “It broadens the horizon for people and connects them to the scientific community, fostering potential future careers in science and technology.”
Commemorating Achievements in Science & Technology
The first event was held at JC Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, in celebration of National Technology Day. A highlight of the event was keynote lectures by Sushil Kumar Tomar and Maithili Sharan, revealing insights into India’s nuclear programme and indigenous technology’s role in development. The interactive exhibitions offered dynamic discussions and demonstrated the impactful contributions from students and researchers.
Exploring the Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence
With a focus on Artificial Intelligence, Chetan Arora from IIT Delhi’s department of computer science and engineering shared ongoing research at the institute. A riveting panel discussion debated whether AI represents a replacement or an augmentation of human intelligence, highlighting its growing significance in today’s world.
Through ‘Jigyasa’, IIT Delhi embarks on a mission to cultivate enthusiasm for scientific exploration and to inspire the next generation to delve into the endless possibilities of science and technology. Let this be a step towards more inclusive and democratized scientific knowledge. According to Times of India, initiatives like these help foster a community grounded in curiosity and innovation.
