Vietnam’s Ambitious 5G Rollout Plan
Vietnam has embarked on an ambitious journey to achieve complete nationwide 5G coverage by 2030. According to the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, the nation aims to accelerate digital transformation and harness the benefits of 5G technology as a core element of its economic strategy. Already, telecom operators like Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone are making significant strides in expanding their 5G infrastructure.
Pioneering Technological Growth
The commercialisation of 5G is not merely a technological upgrade; it represents a pivotal shift towards a more connected and digitally integrated society. As stated by Le Thai Hoa, Deputy Director of the ARFM, 5G infrastructure is crucial to Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth and advances its industrialisation processes. According to Vietnam+ (VietnamPlus), the impact of this transition is expected to be profound across various sectors.
Strategic Government Initiatives
The government’s proactive measures, including Resolution No. 193/2025/QH15, have paved the way for special mechanisms supporting science, technology, and digital transformation, providing telecom firms with financial incentives to develop 5G infrastructure. With the aim of nationwide 5G coverage, the government will sponsor up to 15% of investment costs for providers installing at least 20,000 base stations in 2025.
The Economic Ripple Effect
With the commercialisation of 5G, sectors such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing are anticipated to experience a transformative shift. The ultra-fast speeds and minimal latency of 5G networks enable new applications and services, which fuel growth in these crucial sectors. This foundational technology supports Vietnam’s digital ambition, helping it leap into a future where the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) become mainstream enablers.
Telecom Providers Leading the Charge
Telecom providers are at the forefront of this revolution. Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone have already deployed around 11,000 5G base stations, covering approximately 26% of the population. They are set to further intensify efforts, with Viettel alone planning to install 20,000 more stations by the year’s end. These developments are expected to significantly boost the national GDP and enhance Vietnam’s position in global telecommunications.
A Global Digital Powerhouse
Reflecting on these developments, Vietnam has climbed into the global top 20 for mobile broadband access speed, a testament to its successful 5G rollout. The introduction of mid-band 5G has significantly enhanced broadband capabilities, marking a pivotal moment in Vietnam’s digital journey. As 5G continues to expand, Vietnam is set to become a beacon of technological innovation and economic dynamism.
