Mangaluru Unveils 230 High-Tech Cameras to Crack Down on Traffic Violations

As the vibrant coastal city of Mangaluru ushers in a new era of smart technology, the roads will no longer be a free-for-all escape lane for traffic violators. The city is on the verge of initiating operations of 230 high-tech cameras that promise to revolutionize traffic enforcement.

The Eye in the Sky

These cameras, strategically positioned at 34 key locations including the bustling M.G. Road and the Mangaladevi Temple Road, are more than mere deterrents. They capture both images and videos of errant vehicles, providing real-time feeds to the Integrated Command Control Centre at Lalbagh. Here, law-enforcement officers authenticate violations and effortlessly generate e-challans, as outlined by an official of the Mangaluru Smart City Ltd.

More Than Just Cameras

Unlike any surveillance project before it, these devices are equipped with Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, evidence cameras for capturing seatbelt offenses, and bullet cameras for continuous traffic monitoring. This comprehensive setup ensures all aspects of traffic compliance are addressed, leaving little room for oversight.

Integration and Communication

Another intriguing element to this advancement is its seamless integration with the Union Transport Department’s vehicle database, a part of the ‘Parivahan’ system maintained by the National Informatics Centre. This alliance allows for the swift processing of footage, culminating in automated messages to vehicle owners about their infractions, which they can contest within a 15-day window.

The Bigger Picture

These efforts form a portion of the second phase of the Intelligent Traffic Management System Project, under the broader Mangaluru Smart City Mission. The Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, is expected to officially commission these operations, marking a formidable step forward in the city’s journey toward becoming a fully smart city. According to The Hindu, the anticipation surrounding this grand launch is palpable, with officials confident that the system will significantly enhance road safety and order.

Going Beyond Traffic

Notably, the system’s capacity extends beyond traffic management. The initial 15 monitors installed also serve purposes such as air pollution tracking, showcasing the city’s dedication to comprehensive urban management practices.

The Future of Traffic Management

Enhanced operations at traffic signals across 13 locations in the city through an adaptive management system point towards a future where traffic flow is optimized not just for enforcement but for efficiency and environmental health as well.

In essence, Mangaluru is on the cusp of setting a benchmark in urban traffic solutions, deploying technology that not only disciplines but also enriches the community it serves.
